When you find or suspect there is damage to your cargo :

1. Do not issue a clean receipt to the forwarder or carrier.

2. For export cargo : Ask the survey agent, which is listed on the insurance policy, to carry out investigation. Send the survey report to the insurer then.

3. For import cargo : When cargo arrives at Hong Kong with damage, inform the insurer at once which will then appoint a qualified surveyor to investigate.

4. Submit the following documents :
a. Certificate/Policy of Insurance (original).
b. Shipping invoices (original), together with Shipping Specification and/or Weight Notes/ Packing List.
c. Bill of Lading (original) and/or other contract of carriage involved during the voyage.
d. Survey report exception list or other documentary evidence such as exception certificate to show the extent of loss or damage.
e. Landing Account and Weight Notes at final destination.
f. Correspondence exchanged with the carriers and other parties regarding their liability for the loss or damage.

Who should pay the surveyor?

- If the losses listed in the survey report are included in the policy coverage, it is the insurer who should pay the survey fee.

- Otherwise, you (the cargo owner) are to pay the survey fee.
